Your trip to Deoghar is not complete without offering your respects at the sacred Shri Baidyanath Temple. This ancient temple complex is the heart of Deogarh and draws pilgrims from all across the globe, particularly during the Shravani Mela.
What to do
See the daily rituals and prayers, pay your respects to the principal Jyotirlinga,and visit the 21 other temples in the complex that are dedicated to other deities. Enjoy the intricate architecture and absorb the spiritual environment. Watch out for the crowds, particularly during peak season.

The special aspect of this Jyotirlinga is that it is said to be a union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, representing harmony and unity. The knot (gathbandhan) that binds the Shiva and Parvati temples is also very sacred.

Just outside the main town, this exquisite temple, modeled on the Belur Math in West Bengal, was constructed by Queen Charushila Devi in the early 20th century. The serene environment and the architectural elegance make it unmissable.

Although a place of learning first and foremost, the Ramakrishna Mission here is renowned for its tranquil atmosphere and the stunning temple in honor of Sri Ramakrishna. It provides a tranquil retreat and information about the teachings of the Ramakrishna Order.

Located about 10 km from Deoghar, Tapovan is a cluster of caves and temples believed to have been a meditation site for Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana. The Sita Kund here is a natural spring with mythological significance. It's a great place for a peaceful excursion and offers scenic views.

Trikut Pahar, which literally means three peaks, is just about 10 km away from Deoghar. It is a most popular trekking site and gives an unobstructed view of the landscape. You could also take a ropeway to the summit for a stunning experience. The forests are dense and the atmosphere so peaceful, it is an ideal picnic place.

A short distance from the Baidyanath Temple, Shivaganga is a holy pond said to have been formed by Lord Shiva himself when he hit the ground with his Trishul to satisfy the thirst of Ravana. Pilgrims take a dip in its sacred waters before proceeding to the main temple.

The months from October to March are winter months and have good weather for sightseeing. If you want to enjoy the grandeur of the Shravani Mela, visit during the monsoon month of Shravan (June-August in general).
