Planning to visit Delhi’s famous Sarojini Nagar Market? Don’t worry it’s open and bustling, despite viral videos claiming otherwise. Here’s the real story & what visitors need toknow.
One of Delhi’s most popular shopping destinations, Sarojini Nagar Market, made headlines recently after viral videos claimed it had been demolished. These social media posts sparked panic among locals and travellers who love bargain shopping at this iconic market.
On the night of May 17, 2025, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Police
carried out an anti-encroachment drive. Around 150 to 200 illegal stalls, temporary structures, and signboards were removed to make the market safer and more accessible.
The operation happened between 11:30 PM and 1:00 AM, with authorities citing safety risks and overcrowding concerns.
Shopkeepers Protest the Drive Local shopkeepers expressed their frustration, claiming that even authorised shops were affected during the drive. Some said they had asked authorities to target illegal vendors, but their own businesses were also hit in the process.
Viral Reels Caused Confusion Soon after the drive, several viral reels and videos surfaced online, showing bulldozers clearing structures in the market. These clips led to widespread rumours that Sarojini Nagar Market had been completely demolished, causing anxiety among regular visitors and travel enthusiasts.

The Sarojini Nagar Market Shopkeepers Association released an official statement confirming this.
Ashok Kalra, president of the association, said:
“Please don’t believe baseless rumours. The market is open and we welcome shoppers as always.”
They also took to social media to clear up the misinformation and invite visitors back.
If you’re planning a shopping trip to Delhi, you can still head to Sarojini Nagar Market for its famous street bargains, fashionable clothes, and lively street food stalls. While a few unauthorised stalls have been removed, the market’s charm and hustle remain intact.
Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar Market continues to be a must-visit destination for travellers looking for affordable fashion, accessories, and a slice of Delhi’s street shopping culture. Don’t let the viral reels fool you - the market is still very much open!
