Air Kerala Set to Launch Regional Flights from Kannur in June 2025

In a significant boost to regional connectivity, Air Kerala is preparing to commence operations from Kannur International Airport in June 2025. This marks the arrival of a new airline in the Indian aviation sector, with a focus on improving domestic travel options and laying the groundwork for future international routes.

Domestic Routes to Start First

Air Kerala will begin by operating short-haul domestic flights, covering destinations within a one-and-a-half-hour flying radius from Kannur. This strategic approach aims to enhance regional connectivity and address growing demand for reliable and affordable travel options in Kerala and neighboring states.

Future Plans for International Expansion

While the initial focus will remain on domestic routes, Air Kerala has expressed clear intentions to expand into international operations in the future. With Kannur Airport positioned strategically, the airline aims to leverage its location for connecting flights to key global destinations.

Progress Towards Launch

Significant milestones have already been achieved in preparation for the airline's launch. Key leadership roles, including the CEO and CFO, have been filled, and the airline received a no-objection certificate from the Civil Aviation Ministry in July 2023. The next step involves securing the required flying permit from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Aircraft and Fleet Details

To kickstart operations, Air Kerala will deploy regional twin-engine turboprop ATR aircraft, designed for short-haul routes. As operations scale up, the airline plans to introduce narrow-body jets to cater to longer domestic routes and eventual international services.

With the addition of Air Kerala, the Indian aviation sector is set to see enhanced competition, better connectivity, and improved travel options for passengers. As June 2025 approaches, all eyes will be on Kannur Airport as it prepares to welcome this new player to the skies.
