Earthquakes and Landslides Disrupt Central Highlands of Vietnam, Impacting Tourism

A series of earthquakes ranging from magnitudes 3.0 to 4.0 struck Vietnam's Kon Plong district on November 30, sending shockwaves through the central highlands and causing widespread alarm. The tremors, felt as far as Quang Nam province, have disrupted daily life and posed challenges for the region’s growing tourism sector.

Seismic Events Shake Communities

The Institute of Geophysics in Vietnam reported six earthquakes within a single afternoon and evening. The strongest aftershocks, registering between magnitudes 3.5 and 4.0, caused significant distress among locals, particularly in Nam Tra My district. Residents, including those in Tu Hon village, described the tremors as unusually strong and unsettling.

Families fled their homes as boulders dislodged from mountain slopes, creating a hazardous environment. Neighboring areas, including Quang Ngai, also felt the tremors, spreading unease across the region.

Landslides Add to Crisis

The earthquakes triggered a series of landslides, particularly in Tu Hon village, situated at the foot of the Ngoc Mong mountain. Massive boulders rolled perilously close; just 30 to 50 meters; from residential areas and a local kindergarten.

Authorities quickly evacuated affected households and set up temporary shelters. Rescue teams assessed the situation, identifying unstable boulders trapped in tree trunks and cliffs, which posed further risks.
