India has made notable progress in the global tourism sector, climbing nine places to secure 31st position in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Travel & Tourism Development Index 2026. Released on 25 September 2026, the report evaluates 110 economies based on the factors that support tourism development, including infrastructure, cultural resources, connectivity and sustainability.
The improvement highlights India's growing potential as a destination for travellers seeking cultural experiences, historic landmarks, diverse landscapes and affordable holidays. However, the ranking measures the conditions that support tourism rather than directly measuring tourist arrivals or the popularity of individual destinations.
India's rich cultural heritage and competitive travel costs remain important advantages. The country offers an extraordinary range of experiences, from the Himalayan mountains and Rajasthan's desert landscapes to Kerala's backwaters, Goa's beaches and the historic cities of Hampi and Varanasi.
The WEF report also highlighted improvements in tourism infrastructure, cultural resources and business travel resources as factors contributing to India's progress. India is among the world's top 10 economies for the number of UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites, reinforcing its appeal to travellers interested in history, architecture and local traditions.
Better transport connections and continued investment in tourism facilities can make destinations easier to access and help visitors explore beyond the country's most famous tourist hubs.
While India recorded a significant improvement, Japan secured the top position in the 2026 index. The United States ranked second, followed by Spain, Australia and France, completing the top five. The rankings reflect the strength of the overall environment for tourism, rather than simply the number of visitors a country receives.
Japan's first-place finish also highlights the importance of combining cultural attractions with well-developed transport systems, visitor services and effective destination management.
Despite its progress, India has several areas to strengthen before it can compete more closely with the world's leading tourism economies. The WEF report identifies tourism infrastructure, workforce skills and environmental sustainability as important areas requiring further attention.
Improving public facilities, maintaining clean tourist areas, protecting heritage sites and supporting local communities will be essential to creating more comfortable and responsible travel experiences. Sustainable tourism is particularly important in ecologically sensitive destinations, where growing visitor numbers can place pressure on natural resources and local infrastructure.
Developing lesser-known destinations can also help distribute tourism benefits more widely, reduce pressure on overcrowded attractions and encourage travellers to discover different regions of India.
India's improved ranking is an encouraging sign for the country's tourism industry. For domestic travellers, it reinforces the appeal of exploring destinations beyond the usual holiday circuits. For international visitors, India's combination of cultural heritage, varied landscapes and competitive costs offers opportunities for everything from adventure travel and wildlife experiences to heritage tours and slow travel.
However, a higher ranking does not automatically guarantee better facilities at every destination. The experience travellers have will continue to depend on local infrastructure, transport options, visitor management and the quality of tourism services.
India's rise to 31st place marks progress, but maintaining that momentum will require more than attracting visitors. Investment in infrastructure, skilled tourism professionals, environmental protection and responsible destination management will play a crucial role in the sector's long-term development.
As travellers increasingly seek meaningful experiences and destinations that balance tourism with local needs, India has an opportunity to build on its cultural and natural strengths. The next step is to ensure that this potential translates into accessible, sustainable and rewarding travel experiences across the country.
