Powerful Earthquake Hits Nepal and Tibet: Tremors Felt Across India

Early Tuesday morning, a massive earthquake of magnitude 7.1 shook Nepal and Tibet, sending tremors rippling through parts of India, including Delhi-NCR, Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal. The quake, which struck at 6:35 am, caused widespread panic, with residents rushing out of their homes in affected areas.

The epicenter was near the Nepal-Tibet border, close to Lobuche, a village near the stunning Khumbu Glacier and Everest Base Camp, just 150 kilometers east of Kathmandu. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake originated in Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region) at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Tragic Loss in Tibet

The earthquake caused significant devastation in Tibet, with 53 lives lost and 62 injured in Dingri County, Xigaze City. Relief teams are already on the ground, working to assist the affected communities.

To make matters worse, two aftershocks followed shortly after:

  • Magnitude 4.7 at 7:02 am, at a depth of 10 km

  • Magnitude 4.9 at 7:07 am, at a depth of 30 km

Tremors in Nepal and India

In Nepal, the quake was strongly felt in Kathmandu and nearby areas, including the picturesque village of Lobuche, a popular stop for trekkers heading to Everest Base Camp. Luckily, no major damage has been reported so far.

In India, Bihar felt the tremors most intensely, with people seen evacuating buildings as a precaution. Delhi-NCR and other regions in North India also experienced mild tremors, though no property damage or injuries have been reported.

A Seismically Active Region

The Himalayan region is no stranger to earthquakes, being a hotbed of tectonic activity where the Indian and Eurasian plates collide. This quake serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability, recalling the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake that left nearly 9,000 dead.

Stay Safe While Traveling

If you’re traveling in the Himalayas or nearby areas, it’s a good idea to stay informed about seismic activity and safety precautions. Keep emergency contacts handy, follow local advisories, and stay alert for aftershocks.

While the region is undeniably breathtaking with its snow-capped peaks and serene villages, nature's unpredictability is part of its charm; and challenge. Stay safe, but don’t let this deter you from exploring one of the most majestic regions on Earth!
