Wherever you decide to celebrate, you'll find a number of typical traditions and practices that characterize Teej:
Nirjala Vrat: Married women fast strictly under a "Nirjala Vrat," a waterless fast, praying for the longevity and good health of their husbands. Even unmarried girls fast for a good husband.
Shringar and Mehndi: Women dress in new, vibrant colorful traditional clothes (usually green, red, or yellow), bangles, and intricate mehndi work on hands and feet, depicting marital happiness and prosperity.
Swinging (Jhoola): Swings are an important component of Teej, representing bliss and the rainy season. Women swing while singing old folk songs.
Sindhara: Married daughters' parents send a gift hamper named "Sindhara" to their daughter and in-laws. This usually consists of traditional sweets (particularly Ghewar), new clothes, bangles, and henna.
Puja and Devotional Songs: Women perform rituals and offer prayers to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, seeking their blessings. Devotional songs dedicated to the divine couple are sung.
