Mysore Dasara, also known as Navaratri or Dussehra in other parts of India, has its roots deeply embedded in the city's history. Legend has it that the festival dates back to the 15th century when the Vijayanagara Empire ruled the region. It was during this time that the kingdom celebrated the victory of Goddess Chamundeshwari, the city's presiding deity, over the demon Mahishasura. The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, and it continues to be an important cultural and religious event in Mysore.

The grandeur of Mysore Dasara begins with the stunning Mysore Palace, the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty. The palace is a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic architecture and is beautifully illuminated during the festival. As the sun sets, the palace is bathed in a mesmerizing array of lights, creating a sight that leaves visitors spellbound. The palace gates are thrown open to the public during Dasara, allowing everyone to marvel at its opulence.

One of the highlights of Mysore Dasara is the traditional exhibition held at the exhibition grounds. This sprawling fair features a wide range of stalls selling everything from handcrafted artifacts to local delicacies. You can shop for traditional Mysore silk sarees, intricately carved sandalwood items, and a variety of handicrafts that make for perfect souvenirs. The exhibition also offers a glimpse into Karnataka's rich culture through its various art and craft displays.
Mysore Dasara is not just about the grandeur of the palace and the exhibition; it's also a cultural extravaganza that showcases the city's rich artistic heritage. Throughout the ten days of the festival, you can witness classical music and dance performances by renowned artists from all over India. The melodious tunes of the veena and the rhythmic beats of the mridangam fill the air, creating an enchanting ambiance that will leave music lovers in awe.

No visit to Mysore is complete without indulging in its delectable cuisine. During Dasara, the city comes alive with food stalls serving mouthwatering dishes that are a gastronomic delight. From the aromatic masala dosa to the sweet and savory Mysore pak, there's something to please every palate. Don't forget to savor the authentic Mysore filter coffee that is brewed to perfection.

The grand finale of Mysore Dasara is the spectacular Vijayadashami procession. This procession is a visual extravaganza that attracts thousands of spectators from across the country. It features a grand tableau of the goddess Chamundeshwari placed atop a beautifully adorned elephant, followed by a procession of royal chariots, caparisoned elephants, folk dancers, and musicians. The highlight of the procession is the beautifully decorated elephants, which are a symbol of the city's royal heritage.
While Mysore Dasara is the centerpiece of the festivities, the city and its surrounding areas have much more to offer. Take some time to explore the beautiful Brindavan Gardens, located just a short drive from the city. The gardens are famous for their musical fountain, which comes alive in the evenings with synchronized music and lights.
