Portion of Guwahati airport ceiling collapses due to heavy rain, flights diverted

A section of the ceiling outside Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport collapsed on Sunday after a sudden storm accompanied by heavy rainfall.

Although there were no reported injuries, the collapse led authorities of the airport, which is controlled by the Adani Group, to briefly suspend operations and redirect six flights to alternative destinations.

A viral video of the incident depicted a sudden collapse of the ceiling, prompting passengers and airport staff to seek shelter. Other videos showed airport personnel attempting to clear excess water from the premises.

Utpal Baruah, the Chief Airport Officer (CAO), informed the news agency PTI that the storm uprooted a large tree near the Oil India complex outside the airport, blocking a road.

"The tree was very old and couldn't withstand the impact. As a result, the ceiling broke, causing water to flow inside. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the situation is now under control," he stated.

Baruah also noted that water entered the terminal through the ceiling, but assured that he was personally overseeing the situation to minimize passenger inconvenience. Due to the storm and heavy rainfall, visibility significantly dropped, leading to the diversion of six flights.

Meanwhile, flights operated by IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express were diverted to Agartala and Kolkata. However, as visibility improved later, operations resumed, and flights began landing at Guwahati airport again.
