In a decisive move to prioritize civilian safety, the Government of India has temporarily suspended operations at 27 airports in northern and western regions of the country. This follows the launch of Operation Sindoor, a strategic military response to cross-border threats aimed at neutralizing terror networks that endanger Indian lives.
These closures are part of a well-coordinated security measure and reflect India’s commitment to maintaining peace and protecting its citizens.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation announced that flight operations have been temporarily paused at select airports located close to sensitive zones. The affected airports include:
Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh
Srinagar Airport
Jammu Airport
Leh Airport
Punjab
Amritsar Airport
Pathankot Airport
Ludhiana Airport
Bathinda Airport
Halwara Airport
Patiala Airport
Himachal Pradesh
Shimla Airport
Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali) Airport
Gaggal (Kangra) Airport
Dharamshala (Dhauladhar) Airport
Rajasthan

Gujarat
Bhuj Airport
Jamnagar Airport
Rajkot Airport

Gwalior Airport
These closures are temporary and preventive in nature, intended to secure both air operations and ground personnel as the armed forces carry out strategic missions.
All major airports in metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai continue to function normally. Air connectivity across central and southern India remains unaffected.
Indian airlines including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet have responded swiftly, offering schedule updates and rebooking options to affected passengers. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and flight operations are expected to resume as soon as the security review permits.
Travelers are advised to confirm their flight status with airlines before departure and report early to accommodate heightened airport security checks.
Operation Sindoor was launched following deliberate provocations from across the border. India’s action is focused, defensive, and in line with international protocols on counterterrorism. It aims to dismantle infrastructure used by anti-national elements, without affecting civilian populations.
India continues to act with responsibility, restraint, and a focus on long-term stability in the region.
This is a temporary preventive measure with limited regional impact
Major cities and international flight routes remain operational
Tourism continues uninterrupted across most parts of India
Civil aviation authorities are providing regular updates on resumption plans
This moment calls for unity and trust in India's institutions. The government has taken a firm but balanced approach to safeguard both national security and traveler interests. The temporary airport closures underscore India's preparedness and its focus on protecting lives first.
Travelers and the tourism industry are advised to stay calm, informed, and confident in the country's resilience and capability.
