Passengers on a Scoot flight, the Singapore-based budget airline, from Ipoh to Singapore were in for a pleasant surprise when President Tharman Shanmugaratnam boarded the same plane earlier this week.
Instead of travelling by private jet, the Singapore President chose to return from his working visit to Perak on a regular commercial flight. He was the last to board and took a seat in the front row. Once travellers realised who was onboard, the cabin broke into applause - a simple yet warm gesture that set the tone for the short journey home. President Tharman responded with a smile and a wave, acknowledging the cheer before take-off.
Videos of the moment have since circulated online, with many commenting on the President’s approachable and down-to-earth choice of travel. Just a day earlier, he had also flown Scoot into Ipoh, where passengers at the gate recognised him as well.
For many passengers, the moment was a reminder that leadership does not always need to be wrapped in luxury. By skipping the private jet and choosing a budget flight, President Tharman showed that travel can be simple, relatable, and dignified. The sight of a head of state seated in economy sent a quiet but powerful message - sometimes the most meaningful statement is made through humility.
The incident also highlights why budget airlines continue to be a popular choice across Asia. They make short regional hops affordable and accessible, and occasionally deliver unexpected moments that travellers carry with them long after landing.
For Indian flyers, carriers such as Air India, IndiGo, AirAsia and Scoot have made trips to Singapore, Malaysia, and more convenient than ever. Whether it’s a quick city break or a weekend getaway, budget flights keep the spirit of travel approachable and every now and then, they make the journey itself a story worth sharing.
