Pahalgam, April 22, 2025 – In a deeply tragic turn of events, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, has left 25 Indian tourists dead along with a Nepali national reported. The incident occurred at Baisaran meadow, a picturesque and frequently visited location near Pahalgam, often included in standard Kashmir tour itineraries.
Gunmen opened fire on groups of tourists on Tuesday morning. Many were on pony rides or exploring the meadow when the attack happened. Security agencies suspect the involvement of The Resistance Front, a militant outfit linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba. According to initial reports, the attack was aimed at discouraging the presence of non-locals in the region.
The attack is among the worst in recent years to target civilians in a tourist area, raising urgent questions about safety in Kashmir’s southern regions as the summer travel season begins.
If you’ve planned or are considering travel to Kashmir in the coming weeks, here’s what you need to know:
Tourism to South Kashmir is suspended until further notice, including areas like Pahalgam, Anantnag, Pulwama, and Shopian.
No restrictions currently apply to Srinagar city, Gulmarg, or Sonmarg, but tourists are advised to stay alert and monitor official updates.
Authorities have urged travellers to avoid remote or forested areas in any part of Jammu and Kashmir for the time being.

Armed forces have increased patrols across Kashmir.
Tourists already in Pahalgam and nearby areas are being relocated to safer zones or assisted with return travel.
A high-level security review is ongoing, and intelligence agencies are on alert for further threats.
A dedicated help desk has been established at the Police Control Room Anantnag to assist tourists requiring assistance or information.

Review your travel plans. If your itinerary includes Pahalgam or any location in South Kashmir, speak to your travel agent or hotel for alternatives or refunds.
Check your travel insurance. Confirm if your policy covers cancellations due to unrest or government-issued advisories.
Look at alternative destinations like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, North Bengal, or Ladakh, which remain safe and seasonally pleasant.
Travellers who continue to visit Jammu and Kashmir are advised to:
Register with local tourism offices upon arrival.
Avoid secluded areas or night travel.
Do not engage in political discussions in sensitive zones.
Always carry ID and cooperate with security checks.
While Kashmir has long been celebrated for its unmatched beauty and hospitality, this incident is a harsh reminder of the region’s unpredictable security situation. Tourism authorities have assured that security measures will be re-evaluated and strengthened, with safety of travellers given the highest priority.
Travel responsibly. Stay informed. Prioritise safety.
