In a monumental achievement, Indian Railways transported over 3 crore passengers in a single day on November 4, 2024, marking a historic milestone in India's transportation sector. This record-breaking event, announced by the Ministry of Railways, underlines the national transporter's dedication to meeting peak demand during India's festive season.
On November 4, Indian Railways recorded its highest single-day passenger count of the year, moving a total of 3 crore passengers. This number includes 120.72 lakh non-suburban travelers - 19.43 lakh reserved passengers and 101.29 lakh unreserved passengers - as well as a staggering 180 lakh suburban commuters. This unprecedented level of passenger movement highlights the capacity and efficiency of Indian Railways, especially as the nation celebrated major festivals such as Diwali and Chhath Puja.
Between October 1 and November 5, approximately 6.85 crore passengers traveled with Indian Railways to key regions including Bihar, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. This seasonal influx exceeds the combined population of countries like Australia and New Zealand, showcasing the massive scale of travel during this time. To accommodate this demand, Indian Railways has operated an additional 4,521 special trains, carrying 65 lakh passengers over the past 36 days.
"These additional services have been crucial in supporting smooth travel during the festive season," the ministry noted, adding that these efforts reflect Indian Railways' commitment to ensuring that travel remains accessible and convenient during peak times.
As the festive season draws to a close, Indian Railways is preparing for the return journey of millions of passengers from November 8, with the conclusion of Chhath Puja. To ease congestion and provide ample capacity, the national transporter has scheduled 164 special trains on November 8, and will deploy 160, 161, and 155 special trains on November 9, 10, and 11, respectively.
These extensive efforts underscore Indian Railways' resolve to facilitate comfortable and seamless travel for its passengers, ensuring sufficient availability and reduced crowding during this busy period. The ministry has also emphasized that this commitment to expanding services represents a 73% increase in special train operations compared to the previous year, making this year’s travel season a smoother experience for everyone.
