Tanzania Introduces Mandatory Travel Insurance for Foreign Visitors in 2026

Tanzania's New Travel Insurance Rule: What Tourists Need to Know

International travellers planning a trip to Tanzania should be aware of a new travel requirement introduced in October 2026. Foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania must obtain designated inbound travel insurance, according to an official government notice issued in September. The requirement took effect on 1 October 2026.

The change is particularly relevant for travellers visiting Tanzania for wildlife safaris, Mount Kilimanjaro treks and cultural experiences. Visitors should arrange the required insurance before departure to help avoid delays during entry procedures.

How Much Does Tanzania's Mandatory Travel Insurance Cost?

Under the new arrangement, the designated inbound travel insurance costs US$44 per visitor and is valid for up to 92 days, subject to the policy's terms and conditions. The cover is intended to provide assistance for medical emergencies.

Foreign visitors entering through mainland Tanzania must obtain the designated cover through the National Insurance Corporation (NIC). Travellers entering through Zanzibar should follow the applicable requirements and purchase arrangements of the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).

What Should Travellers Do Before Departure?

Before travelling, visitors should:

  • Purchase the applicable inbound insurance through the official provider.

  • Check the policy's coverage, exclusions and validity period.

  • Keep their insurance confirmation and certificate accessible.

  • Confirm the latest entry requirements with official authorities.

  • Consider separate comprehensive travel insurance for wider medical expenses, evacuation and other risks that may not be covered by the mandatory policy.

Official purchase information is available through the National Insurance Corporation for mainland Tanzania and the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation for Zanzibar.

What Does This Mean for Travellers?

The new rule adds another step to the trip-planning process, making it important to check insurance and entry requirements alongside visas, flights and accommodation.

Travellers should also remember that mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar have designated insurance arrangements. Those visiting both should check the latest official guidance on which policy applies to their itinerary before paying, as subsequent clarifications address how valid policies apply across both destinations.

Final Thoughts

Tanzania remains an appealing destination for safari holidays, mountain adventures and coastal escapes, but visitors should factor the new mandatory travel insurance requirement into their preparations. Arranging the correct cover before departure can help make the entry process smoother.
