Mangaluru, a city known for its scenic beauty and bustling ports, is all set to join the ranks of cities offering sustainable, eco-friendly transport with the launch of its very own Water Metro. Building on the success of Kochi’s Water Metro in Kerala, this ambitious project is expected to transform the way locals and tourists travel, offering a greener alternative to conventional urban transport.
The Mangaluru Water Metro Project (MWMP) is an innovative water-based public transport system that aims to connect various parts of the city along the Nethravathi and Gurupura rivers. With the Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) overseeing its development, the project is designed to create a sustainable, efficient, and affordable transportation network that caters to both commuters and tourists.
The system will span a 30-kilometer route, stretching from Bajal to Maravoor, and will be supported by 17 strategically placed stations along the way. These stations will be located on both sides of the rivers, improving connectivity for communities that were once isolated by the waterways.
The Mangaluru Water Metro aims to tackle urban congestion while promoting environmentally friendly practices. With electric and diesel-powered catamaran boats in its fleet, the system will help reduce carbon emissions, offering an eco-conscious alternative to traditional forms of transport like buses and cars. The boats will be equipped with modern amenities, ensuring passengers enjoy a comfortable and safe journey as they glide along the scenic rivers.
The Water Metro will not only provide daily commuting options but will also open up new opportunities for tourism, allowing visitors to explore the city from a unique perspective. The 17 proposed stations are located near key landmarks, ensuring easy access to both popular and lesser-known areas of the city. Here are the stations planned for the first phase of the project:
Bajal
Someshwara Temple
Jeppinamogaru
Bolar Sea Face (Beach View)
Ullal (Kotepura)
Hoige Bazar (CMFRI)
Bengre
Bunder (Old Port)
Bolur-Bokkapatna
Thannir Bhavi
Sulthan Batheri
New Mangalore Port (NMPA)
Bangra Kuluru
Kuluru Bridge
Baikampady Industrial Area
Kunjath Bail
Maravoor Bridge
These stations will make it easier for locals to travel between different neighborhoods, while also offering tourists the chance to enjoy the stunning waterways that run through Mangaluru.
Once completed, the Mangaluru Water Metro will be the second-largest water transport network in India, following Kochi’s successful model. The project is expected to enhance the city’s connectivity, boost local economies, and improve the quality of life for residents. By embracing sustainability and modern transport solutions, Mangaluru is setting itself up as a forward-thinking, eco-friendly urban hub.
This project is a step toward transforming Mangaluru into a more integrated city, where both commuters and tourists can enjoy an environmentally conscious and efficient way to get around.
Mangaluru's Water Metro Project will follow in the footsteps of Kochi, which became the first city in India to implement such a system. While Kochi’s Water Metro is already under development, Mangaluru’s project is still in the planning stages but is expected to make a huge impact once operational. Both cities are part of a larger trend of integrating water-based transport systems with urban infrastructure in India.
The Mangaluru Water Metro is set to be a game-changer, improving the city’s transport system and contributing to a cleaner, greener future. For travelers and locals alike, it offers a new way to explore the beauty of Mangaluru’s rivers, while fostering economic growth and creating a more sustainable city.
Whether you’re a commuter looking for an eco-friendly ride or a tourist wanting to experience Mangaluru from the water, the Water Metro will soon offer an exciting, modern, and greener way to travel around the city.
