Departure Gate Access Granted for Flight Delays: Recent Airport Rule Amendments

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has issued new guidelines permitting passengers to exit an aircraft through an airport departure gate in case of flight delays, following numerous reports of passengers being stranded onboard after boarding.

New Guidelines: What Flight Passengers Can Expect?

BCAS Director General Zulfiquar Hasan announced that the guidelines, disseminated to airlines and airport operators on March 30, are now effective, aiming to minimize passenger inconvenience. Hasan emphasized that these rules will alleviate the need for passengers to remain onboard aircraft for extended periods after boarding. He underscored the responsibility of airport operators to arrange necessary infrastructure, including screening facilities, to comply with the guidelines. Hasan noted that decisions regarding passenger deboarding will be made jointly by airlines and relevant security agencies.

Why has the rule been introduced?

The introduction of the rule stems from a series of reported flight delays, highlighted by an incident on January 17, where BCAS imposed fines totaling ₹1.80 crore on IndiGo and MIAL. This was because passengers got off an IndiGo plane at Mumbai airport and ate on the tarmac after their Goa-Delhi flight was delayed for a long time on January 14.

Changes in Accordance with New Guidelines
