A ground collision involving two commercial aircraft at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) has drawn major attention after a SpiceJet plane struck a stationary Akasa Air aircraft on Thursday. The incident happened on the airport apron area while one aircraft was taxiing and the other was waiting for departure. Authorities have confirmed that all passengers and crew are safe, but both aircraft suffered visible damage.
According to initial reports, a SpiceJet Boeing 737-700 operating flight SG-124 from Leh to Delhi was taxiing toward its allocated parking bay at Terminal 1. During the movement, the aircraft’s right winglet made contact with an Akasa Air Boeing 737 that was stationary on the apron after pushback for its scheduled Delhi to Hyderabad service.
The collision reportedly occurred around 2:15 PM local time.

Following the incident, both aircraft were grounded for inspection and technical checks.
Yes. Early statements indicate there were no injuries among passengers or crew members on either aircraft. Akasa Air said passengers were safely disembarked and alternative travel arrangements were being made for those flying to Hyderabad.
India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is investigating the ground collision. The probe is expected to examine taxiing procedures, apron coordination, aircraft spacing, and communication between ground control teams.
Although the incident did not occur during takeoff or landing, apron and taxiway collisions are taken seriously because they can cause expensive aircraft damage, delays, and safety concerns. The case also highlights the importance of precise ground movement management at busy airports like Delhi IGI.
The SpiceJet-Akasa Air collision at Delhi airport ended without injuries, but it has raised fresh questions about ground safety procedures at one of India’s busiest aviation hubs. With the DGCA now investigating, more details are expected in the coming days.
