The Southwest monsoon is expected to arrive in Kerala on May 31 this year, with the state already experiencing heavy rainfall across most districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in isolated areas until Tuesday. Strong winds are also forecasted on various days, and the disaster management authority has advised against venturing into the sea until further notice. In such conditions, what should tourists be mindful of in Kerala?

While Kerala attracts many 'pluviophile' travelers who enjoy the monsoon season, all tourists can benefit from the following advice:
Plan Ahead and Stay Informed: Heavy rains may lead to the closure of tourist destinations. Avoid spontaneous trips and always check with local authorities if your destination is open. Keep important contact numbers handy and stay updated with local news.
Safety on the Roads: If possible, avoid driving yourself. Roads can be slippery and prone to flash floods or landslides during heavy rains. Hire local drivers who are familiar with safe routes and have experience navigating the local terrain.
Health Precautions: Be vigilant about health and hygiene. Eat in clean conditions and avoid muddy or stagnant waters to prevent insect-borne, food, and waterborne diseases. Drink only bottled or boiled water and avoid raw or undercooked food.
Emergency Supplies: Ensure you have essential medicines, strong umbrellas, raincoats, flashlights, a first aid kit, fully charged mobile phones, power backup devices, and chargers. Wear weather-appropriate clothing to stay warm and dry.
Flexible Plans: Be prepared for itinerary changes and possibly staying indoors. Pack light but include essentials like waterproof clothing and footwear.
Protect Your Devices: Use waterproof cases for your gadgets and, if possible, travel with water-resistant devices, especially for outdoor activities.
An orange alert has been issued for Palakkad and Malappuram districts on Saturday (May 18) and for Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha on Sunday (May 19). Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts will be on orange alert on May 20 and 21, with expected rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm per hour. Strong winds of 30 to 40 km per hour are anticipated on May 19 and 20. A yellow alert has also been issued for several districts, and the State Disaster Management Authority advises against sea activities until further notice due to adverse weather conditions.
