If you’ve ever battled the chaos of booking a Tatkal ticket, this one’s for you.
Let’s be honest - Tatkal bookings can feel like a mini warzone. You sit there with your finger hovering over the mouse or phone screen, heart racing as the clock hits 10AM for AC tickets (or 11AM for sleeper). In a matter of seconds, tickets vanish. Poof. And most of us are left wondering: “How did they get booked so fast?”
Well, you’re not alone.
In a move that could finally bring some order to this madness, Indian Railways is planning to make Aadhaar mandatory for Tatkal ticket bookings. That means, whether you’re booking online through IRCTC or at the ticket counter, you’ll soon have to enter your Aadhaar number and verify to secure that last-minute seat.

For years, genuine passengers have struggled with Tatkal - not because there weren’t enough tickets, but because a section of agents and touts figured out loopholes to block-book tickets using fake IDs or automated tools. The result? Real travelers, even in urgent situations, were often left stranded or forced to pay a premium for something that should have been accessible.
By requiring Aadhaar for Tatkal bookings, the Railways hopes to close those loopholes. No more fake identities. No more mass bookings by bots. Just real names and real people.
Aadhaar will soon be a must for all Tatkal tickets - both online and offline.
This move could significantly reduce misuse and make the system fairer.
If your IRCTC account isn’t Aadhaar-verified yet, now’s a good time to get that sorted.
While the official rollout date hasn’t been announced, early reports suggest it’s coming very soon. And honestly, for anyone who’s ever frantically refreshed a page only to find "waitlisted" staring back - this might finally level the playing field.
So next time you need to rush home, attend an emergency, or make an impromptu business trip, you might actually stand a chance at booking that Tatkal ticket - no bots, no tricks, just your Aadhaar and a bit of luck.
