A tourist's attempt to click the perfect vacation photo turned into a costly mistake after he broke a crystal-studded art piece worth $50,000 - and then quietly walked away like nothing happened.
The incident took place at Palazzo Maffei, a popular art museum in Verona, Italy, a city many Indian travelers include in their Italy itinerary. The art piece in question was a dazzling chair designed by Italian artist Nicola Bolla, inspired by Van Gogh’s 1888 painting Van Gogh’s Chair. But instead of canvas and paint, this version was decked out with hundreds of Swarovski crystals, making it visually stunning - and extremely fragile.
Security footage shows the man plopping himself down on the delicate sculpture while his partner played photographer. Within seconds, two legs of the chair snapped, crystals scattered, and the dream of a dazzling vacation photo turned into a viral oopsie. The couple quickly stood up and left the scene - like burglars in a cartoon, minus the sneaky music.
The chair, designed by Italian artist Nicola Bolla, is a tribute to Van Gogh’s iconic 1888 painting Van Gogh’s Chair. This modern interpretation was adorned with hundreds of Swarovski crystals and was intended purely as a display piece, not for sitting.
Palazzo Maffei’s director wasn’t amused. She called the incident “every museum’s nightmare,” and understandably so - imagine spending years curating delicate art only for someone to treat it like airport seating.

Luckily, museum experts managed to restore the chair within a few days. It’s now back on display, and hopefully roped off like it’s the last slice of pizza at a party.
Meanwhile, the tourists in question remain unidentified - but their seat-snapping antics are now a global meme. Art fans, museum-goers, and every tired museum docent ever have taken to social media to say what we’re all thinking: “Please stop treating priceless art like furniture.”
Moral of the story? For Indian travelers who love documenting every moment of their European holidays, this incident is a gentle reminder: look, admire, and snap photos - but from a respectful distance. Sitting on priceless art, no matter how tempting it looks, is never worth the photo.
And in case you're wondering: yes, that one photo cost roughly ₹42 lakh in damage.
