Air India is set to reduce nearly 22% of its domestic flight operations during the summer season as rising aviation fuel prices and growing financial pressure continue to impact the airline industry in India.
According to recent reports, the Tata Group-owned airline has temporarily rationalized services on several domestic routes between June and August 2026. The move comes shortly after the carrier reduced multiple international services as part of broader operational adjustments.
The primary reason behind the reduction is the sharp increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices. Industry experts say fuel costs now account for nearly 40% of airline operating expenses, making several routes financially difficult to sustain.
Global geopolitical tensions, especially conflicts affecting oil supply routes in the Middle East, have pushed crude oil and jet fuel prices higher in recent months. Air India has stated that the decision was taken due to the “sustained impact of high fuel prices on overall operations.”

Air India currently operates around 4,400 weekly flights, including approximately 3,600 domestic services. Reports suggest that more than 790 weekly domestic flights may be reduced under the temporary schedule adjustment.
The airline clarified that the cuts are not a complete suspension of domestic operations but a temporary reduction in frequencies on select routes.
The reduction in flights is expected to affect seat availability across major Indian cities during the busy summer travel period. Experts believe ticket prices may increase due to reduced capacity and continued travel demand.
Passengers whose flights are affected will reportedly receive:
Alternative flight arrangements
Complimentary date changes
Full refunds where applicable
Air India said it will continue monitoring market demand and operating conditions before restoring normal frequencies.
Air India is not the only airline facing operational challenges. IndiGo and several other carriers have also adjusted schedules due to rising fuel costs and economic uncertainty. Analysts say the Indian aviation sector is currently facing one of its most financially challenging periods in recent years.
The situation highlights how global fuel markets and geopolitical tensions continue to influence airline operations worldwide.
Air India’s decision to cut around 22% of domestic flights reflects the growing pressure on airlines caused by rising fuel prices and operational costs. While the airline describes the move as temporary, travelers across India may experience fewer flight options and higher airfares during the summer months.
Passengers are advised to regularly check flight schedules and booking updates before planning their travel.
