In a shocking series of events, the Delhi Police have uncovered a theft operation of unprecedented scale.
Rajesh Kapoor, a seemingly ordinary man from Delhi, managed to board 200 flights in just 110 days, stealing jewelry worth lakhs from unsuspecting passengers.
This audacious crime spree has exposed significant vulnerabilities in airport security.

The investigation began when a woman traveling from Hyderabad to Delhi reported that jewellery worth ₹7 lakh had been stolen from her handbag.
This incident was followed by another report from an American traveler, Varjinderjit Singh, who lost valuables worth ₹20 lakh during his journey from Amritsar to Frankfurt via Delhi. These complaints prompted a detailed investigation by the Delhi Police.
Kapoor's approach was both sophisticated and risky. He targeted passengers with connecting flights, choosing those who seemed less likely to notice the theft immediately, such as elderly individuals and women. His method involved several strategic steps:
1. Observation and Selection: Kapoor would carefully observe potential targets at airports, focusing on those carrying valuable items.
2. Engagement: He would engage his targets in conversation at boarding gates, subtly gathering information about their baggage.
3. Seat Maneuvering: Kapoor often requested seat changes to sit close to his targets, providing plausible reasons to airline staff.
4. Theft Execution: During the boarding process, he pretended to adjust his own and others' luggage in the overhead bins, using the chaos to discreetly steal valuables from his target's bags.
The police undertook an extensive investigation, reviewing countless hours of CCTV footage from airports in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Amritsar.
This meticulous work eventually led them to Kapoor, who was arrested in Paharganj, Delhi. A raid on his guest house, Ricky Deluxe, uncovered a significant stash of stolen gold and silver jewellery.
Rajesh Kapoor led a double life, using his legitimate businesses as a cover for his criminal activities.
While operating Ricky Deluxe, a guest house in Paharganj, and running a money exchange service and a mobile repair shop, Kapoor orchestrated his thefts.
Initially successful in stealing from train passengers, he later shifted his focus to the more lucrative environment of airports.
Kapoor’s transition to airport thefts was a calculated move. Airports, with their high security and bustling activity, provided both challenges and opportunities, which he exploited with meticulous planning.
The arrest of Kapoor has brought relief to many victims of his thefts. The police are now working to recover more stolen items and are investigating further leads, including a jeweller in Karol Bagh who allegedly purchased the stolen jewellery.
This case underscores the need for increased vigilance and enhanced security measures in airports.
In light of these events, here are some essential tips to keep your belongings safe while traveling:
1. Keep Valuables Close: Always keep your most valuable items, such as jewellery and electronics, in a bag that stays with you, preferably under the seat in front of you.
2. Be Vigilant: Pay attention to your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like boarding gates and security checks. Thieves often exploit distractions.
3. Secure Your Luggage: Use locks on your bags and consider additional security measures like tamper-evident straps to deter potential thieves.
4. Travel Insurance: Ensure you have travel insurance that covers theft and loss of valuables, providing peace of mind and financial protection.
5. Stay Organized: Keep a checklist of your valuable items and check it periodically, especially after security checks and before leaving the airport.

The capture of Rajesh Kapoor is a testament to the resilience and vigilance required to protect the thousands of travelers who pass through these gateways every day.
While this chapter of high-flying heists has come to a close, it serves as a vivid reminder of the ingenuity and audacity some possess, and the need for constant vigilance and improved security measures.
As we move forward, may the lessons learned from this extraordinary case inspire a future where travel is not only an adventure but a secure and peaceful experience for all.
Stay safe, stay vigilant, and happy travels!
