Mumbai’s aviation landscape is preparing for a major change. IndiGo has announced plans to expand its international operations from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), gradually shifting flights from the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) from February 2027.
The move is more than a change in departure points. It marks an important step towards developing Mumbai into a dual-airport hub, giving the region additional capacity to handle growing passenger numbers while allowing the existing airport to undergo redevelopment.
For travellers flying to the Gulf, Southeast Asia or neighbouring countries, this development could change where their journey begins. Here is everything you need to know about IndiGo’s Navi Mumbai expansion, the destinations involved, the expected timeline and how to prepare for the transition.
IndiGo, in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Limited, plans to progressively transfer 12 daily international departures from Mumbai’s existing airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport between February and July 2027.
The airline will also introduce a new daily service to Kathmandu, Nepal. Once the transition is completed, Navi Mumbai is expected to serve 12 international destinations through IndiGo’s network.
The airline also plans to move the domestic flight connections needed to support these international services. This will allow passengers to connect between domestic and international IndiGo flights at Navi Mumbai, subject to the final schedules and operational arrangements.
The announcement is part of a broader effort to distribute flight operations between Mumbai’s two airports rather than concentrating all traffic at one facility.
The planned transition covers IndiGo’s existing international services from Mumbai to 11 destinations, along with a new daily Kathmandu service.
Here is the destination list:
Destination | Country or territory |
Bahrain | Bahrain |
Riyadh | Saudi Arabia |
Dammam | Saudi Arabia |
Jeddah | Saudi Arabia |
Madinah | Saudi Arabia |
Kuwait | Kuwait |
Ras Al Khaimah | United Arab Emirates |
Fujairah | United Arab Emirates |
Muscat | Oman |
Dhaka | Bangladesh |
Jakarta | Indonesia |
Kathmandu | Nepal - planned new daily service |
The network has a strong focus on Gulf destinations, which are important for business travel, tourism, family visits and travel by Indian expatriates. Connections to Dhaka, Jakarta and Kathmandu will also support regional travel across South and Southeast Asia.
An important distinction: The announcement concerns a phased transfer of services, not the launch of 12 entirely new international routes. Kathmandu is the additional destination announced for Navi Mumbai, while the other listed services are planned to move from the existing airport.
Final dates for individual route transfers remain subject to operational coordination and the necessary approvals.
IndiGo plans to begin international operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport in February 2027, with the transition expected to progress through July 2027.
Rather than moving every service at once, the airline intends to transfer flights in phases. This approach is designed to give the airport operator and airline time to coordinate infrastructure, flight schedules and passenger connections.
For travellers, this means the airport used by a particular route could change during the transition period. Anyone booking flights for early or mid-2027 should check the airport printed on their ticket and confirm the latest itinerary before leaving home.
The dates announced so far represent the overall transition plan, not a confirmed switch date for every destination.
Mumbai is one of India's busiest aviation markets, serving domestic passengers, international tourists, business travellers and people travelling abroad to visit family. Its existing airport operates in a densely developed urban area, where expanding infrastructure is challenging.
Navi Mumbai International Airport provides an opportunity to accommodate more traffic and distribute operations across the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The transition also supports the planned redevelopment of Terminal 1 at the existing Mumbai airport, which is targeted for completion by 2030. By shifting some operations to Navi Mumbai, IndiGo and the airport operator aim to create additional capacity for this redevelopment while supporting future international growth.
The two airports are therefore expected to play complementary roles: Navi Mumbai will absorb a share of existing traffic and support expansion, while the existing airport will continue operating and developing its facilities.
For travellers, the biggest change may not be the flight itself but the airport they need to reach.
Mumbai and Navi Mumbai are separate airport locations. A booking described simply as a flight from Mumbai should never be taken as sufficient confirmation of the departure airport.
Check the airport name and code on your ticket. Mumbai's existing airport uses the code BOM, while Navi Mumbai International Airport uses NMI.
This is particularly important for passengers who have already booked accommodation, airport transfers or connecting transport.
IndiGo intends to move the domestic connectivity needed to support its international services. This is intended to make onward connections possible at Navi Mumbai.
However, passengers should not assume that every existing connection will remain unchanged. Check whether both flights depart from the same airport, whether the booking has been updated and whether sufficient connection time is available.
If you have booked separate tickets, allow additional time and verify the arrangements independently.
The journey to Navi Mumbai may differ considerably from the journey to the existing airport, depending on where you live or stay.
Travellers coming from South Mumbai, the western suburbs or elsewhere in the metropolitan region should compare road travel times, traffic conditions and available public transport before departure.
For early-morning flights, late-night arrivals or international journeys with substantial baggage, arranging transport ahead of time can make the experience much smoother.
A lower airfare does not always mean a cheaper overall trip. Transport to the airport, parking, accommodation and the time required to reach the terminal can all affect your travel budget.
When comparing flights during the transition, consider the complete door-to-door journey rather than looking at ticket prices alone.

The planned expansion is also significant for IndiGo's longer-term international strategy.
The airline has indicated that shifting some operations away from the capacity-constrained existing airport will create room for further international expansion in 2027. Its plans include exploring new services across Asia, Africa and Europe, supported by its expanding fleet, including Airbus A320-family aircraft and the A321XLR.
This does not mean that every proposed destination or route is confirmed. New routes will depend on fleet availability, demand, regulatory approvals and operational planning.
Nevertheless, the expansion at Navi Mumbai could give the airline more flexibility to develop its network while the existing airport undergoes redevelopment.
For passengers, the potential benefit is a broader choice of international services from the Mumbai region over time.
If you are planning an international trip from Mumbai in 2027, keep these practical steps in mind:
Confirm the airport: Check whether your flight departs from BOM or NMI.
Verify the latest schedule: Route transfers may take place in phases, so recheck your itinerary close to departure.
Review connecting flights: Confirm the airport and terminal arrangements for every leg of your journey.
Arrange transport early: Factor in traffic, distance and the time needed to reach Navi Mumbai.
Check airline notifications: If your booking changes, read the revised itinerary and contact IndiGo if any detail is unclear.
These checks are especially useful for travellers with connecting flights, pre-booked airport transfers or time-sensitive plans.
IndiGo's expansion at Navi Mumbai International Airport is an important development in India's growing aviation market. The planned transfer of international services could help ease pressure on the existing airport, support its terminal redevelopment and create more room for future route expansion.
For travellers, the transition brings both opportunity and a little extra planning. Navi Mumbai could offer greater international connectivity over time, but the practical experience will depend on reliable transport links, smooth domestic-to-international transfers and clear communication about changing flight schedules.
The most important takeaway is simple: if you are flying from Mumbai in 2027, check your airport before you travel. As the region develops its two-airport system, knowing exactly where your flight departs will be just as important as knowing when it takes off.
