India's First Underwater Metro Set to Open in Kolkata

Kolkata, often hailed as the "City of Joy," is about to add a new chapter to its rich history of transportation with the inauguration of India's first underwater metro. The underwater metro line is situated at 16 meters below the river, this innovative project promises not just convenience but also a thrilling experience for commuters. Make sure to experience this unique metro journey next time you are in Kolkata.

Which metro line has the underwater metro services?

The underwater metro, set to be unveiled on March 6, is a testament to India's engineering prowess and commitment to modernizing its infrastructure. Stretching across the Hooghly River, the metro line will connect Howrah to Kolkata, reducing travel time and easing congestion on the roads. Also opening a new experience to add to your itineraries.

What makes this project truly remarkable is its blend of functionality and aesthetics. One of the most impressive features of the underwater metro is its speed and efficiency. Covering a 520-meter stretch under the river in just 45 seconds, it offers passengers a seamless and time-efficient mode of transportation. This new metro line is part of the East-West Metro corridor, which currently spans 16.6 km, with 10.8 km situated underground, including the Hooghly River tunnel. The remaining portion above ground integrates modern transportation with the city's existing landscape, blending seamlessly into the urban fabric of Kolkata.

The Times of India report highlighted that the East-West Metro station at Howrah, besides being the deepest in India, is poised to become the country's largest metro station. Due to the necessity of aligning with the 40-meter deep under-river tunnels, the station building had to be constructed as tall as a 10-storey building, as reported. Excavation work had to reach a depth of 30.5 meters to ensure perfect alignment with the tunnels beneath the river.

Apart from its novelty, the underwater metro also symbolizes Kolkata's resilience and determination to overcome challenges. Despite facing numerous hurdles, including technical complexities and environmental concerns, the project has finally come to fruition, showcasing the city's unwavering spirit.
