After a five-year gap, India and China are set to restart direct passenger flights, a move that signals a positive shift in their relationship. This decision comes after a long period of halted air travel, which began with the pandemic and was extended by diplomatic tensions. The return of these flights is a welcome development for travelers, businesses, and everyone hoping for smoother ties between the two nations.
The formal announcement is expected to happen at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, at the end of August. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to be there, and it's possible he'll meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This timing is significant, as it follows a recent decision by India to ease visa rules for Chinese tourists. This move is seen as a key step in rebuilding connections that have been dormant since 2020.
Direct flights were first suspended in March 2020 due to global Covid-19 lockdowns. However, the suspension lasted much longer because of heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly following the border clashes in the Galwan Valley. Before the halt, airlines like Air India, IndiGo, Air China, and China Southern operated regular routes. Since then, travelers have had to endure longer and more expensive journeys through hubs like Hong Kong and Singapore.

Major Indian airlines are already preparing for the resumption of services. Before the pandemic, IndiGo operated daily flights from Delhi to Chengdu and from Kolkata to Guangzhou. Air India also had a direct route connecting Delhi to Shanghai. It is widely expected that these popular routes will be among the first to be reinstated. While the final schedule is still being worked out, the government has reportedly asked airlines to be ready to operate flights on short notice, indicating that a quick return to service is a priority.

The resumption of these flights is a huge boost for the economic relationship between India and China. With bilateral trade already exceeding $110 billion, direct air links will make it much easier for business travelers to get around. This will likely lead to increased trade, better supply chains, and new investment opportunities. For students, tourists, and professionals, the return of direct flights means travel will be easier, more affordable, and less time-consuming. It's a great step toward fostering more people-to-people connections.
While this is a very positive sign, experts are urging caution. The resumption of flights is a sign of a cautious warming of relations, not a complete resolution of long-standing issues. The timeline for flights is still being finalized, and there could be more hurdles to clear. The deep mistrust from the 2020 border conflicts still lingers, so a full return to normal will take time. However, this decision is a clear indication that both nations are willing to set aside some differences for the sake of practical cooperation.
