India's largest airline, IndiGo, has strengthened its dominance in the country's aviation sector by achieving a record 66.3% domestic market share in June 2026, according to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The milestone means that nearly two out of every three domestic air travelers in India now fly with IndiGo, reinforcing the carrier's position as the nation's leading airline.
The impressive growth comes at a time when several competing airlines are dealing with operational challenges, capacity reductions, and financial pressures, allowing IndiGo to further expand its presence in the domestic market.

While IndiGo continued its upward trajectory, the Air India Group, which includes Air India and Air India Express, saw its domestic market share decline to 23.9%, down from 25.6% in May.
The drop follows months of operational disruptions and a reduction in flight capacity after the airline scaled back services. Industry analysts believe these cuts created additional opportunities for IndiGo to capture a larger share of passengers across major domestic routes.
India's newest major airline, Akasa Air, also recorded steady progress, increasing its domestic market share to 6.4% in June. Meanwhile, smaller carriers, including SpiceJet, continued to account for a relatively small portion of the market as competition remains intense.

Despite IndiGo's record performance, India's domestic aviation market experienced a seasonal dip in passenger traffic.
DGCA data shows that domestic airlines carried around 1.35 crore passengers in June, lower than May's figures. The decline is largely attributed to the lean travel season, when demand typically softens after the summer holiday rush. However, passenger numbers for the first half of 2026 remained slightly higher than the same period last year, highlighting the long-term resilience of India's aviation sector.
Several factors have contributed to IndiGo's continued market leadership:
Extensive domestic route network covering metro cities and regional destinations.
High flight frequency and reliable operational performance.
Strong fleet expansion strategy with continuous aircraft deliveries.
Competitive fares that attract both leisure and business travelers.
Ability to maintain capacity while competitors reduced flight operations.
IndiGo's record 66.3% market share underscores the airline's growing influence in India's rapidly expanding aviation market. While the carrier continues to benefit from strong demand and operational stability, industry experts note that sustained competition will depend on how quickly rivals restore capacity and improve efficiency.
With India expected to remain one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, airlines are likely to focus on expanding fleets, launching new routes, and improving customer experience to capture future demand.
