Beach visitors at Visakhapatnam's RK Beach were in for a surprise on Monday when the sea unexpectedly pulled back by about 150 meters, revealing a rocky seabed that's usually hidden underwater. This rare event drew crowds eager to explore the newly exposed shoreline, but it also raised some concerns among experts.
As word spread, more and more people headed to the beach, excited to walk on the seabed, take photos, and enjoy the unusually pleasant weather. Even stray dogs got in on the action, wandering around the rocks that had suddenly appeared. It was a memorable day for many, but experts are warning that this phenomenon could be a sign of something more serious.

While it might seem like a cool experience, a receding sea can be a warning sign of rough weather ahead. Arjili Dasu, the General Secretary of the National Fisherfolk Forum, pointed out that such events often come before cyclones, low-pressure systems, or even tsunamis. “Generally, a receding sea is a danger sign. One way or the other, the water comes back,” he said, urging people to be cautious.
Experts from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) explained that the sea pulling back like this could be due to shifts in ocean currents or tidal patterns, which often happen during this time of year. V.V.S.S. Sarma, Chief Scientist at NIO, suggested that this could indicate a low-pressure system forming, which might lead to a cyclone.

As the sea receded, it also revealed something less pleasant: the trash that people have been leaving behind. The rocky seabed was littered with waste, serving as a stark reminder of how much damage careless littering can do to the environment. It's a wake-up call for all of us to be more responsible when we visit these beautiful beaches.
While exploring the exposed seabed was undoubtedly a unique experience, it's important to stay alert. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued a heavy rainfall warning for Andhra Pradesh from August 29 to 31. Although it's too early to say for sure what will happen next, the unusual retreat of the sea could be a sign that we should prepare for some stormy weather.

So, if you're planning to visit the beach, keep an eye on the weather and be cautious. The sea may have pulled back, but it will return, and when it does, it might come with a punch. This is a good reminder that while nature can be fascinating, it can also be unpredictable and powerful.
