Imagine taking off from a busy city and landing gently on a sparkling blue lake or a calm river—without ever touching a runway. This is the promise of seaplane travel in India.
As of 2026, India is finally turning this dream into a reality. With new government support and successful test flights, the era of water-based flying is officially here. Here is everything you need to know about routes, costs, and how to book your first splash-down flight.

The biggest news of 2026 is the successful test flight by SkyHop Aviation, which recently completed a landing and take-off at the Ganga Barrage in Rishikesh (April 2026).
The government has also introduced a special Seaplane Subsidy Scheme in the 2026 Union Budget. This makes it easier for airlines to operate these flights and keeps ticket prices affordable for us. Most operators are using the De Havilland Twin Otter, a sturdy 19-seater plane that can land on both land and water.
The government is prioritizing "Hub and Spoke" models, where a major city acts as a hub connecting to several smaller water-side destinations.

Maharashtra is leading the way with eight confirmed locations for water aerodromes. These routes are designed to connect Mumbai and Nagpur to religious and scenic spots that currently take hours to reach by road.
Mumbai to Mandwa (Alibaug): A quick 15-minute hop to skip the heavy ferry crowds and road traffic.
Mumbai to Ganpatipule: Connecting the financial capital to the famous beach and Ganesh temple in Ratnagiri.
Nagpur to Khindsi Lake: Recently announced as a national hub, Khindsi will offer flights to nearby wildlife and religious sites.
Nashik (Gangapur Dam): Aimed at wine tourists and pilgrims visiting Trimbakeshwar.
Pune (Pavana/Ujani Dam) to Mahabaleshwar: Cutting down the winding mountain drive to a scenic flight over the Sahyadris.
Satara (Koyna Dam/Dhom Dam): Providing easy access to the "Mini Kashmir" of Maharashtra (Tapola) and the Kaas Plateau.

Following the massive surge in tourism, SkyHop Aviation has prioritized this region.
Agatti to Kavaratti: The main transit route for tourists.
Agatti to Minicoy: Connecting the southernmost island, which is otherwise a long ship journey away.

In April 2026, the first successful mountain trial took place.
Rishikesh (Ganga Barrage) to Tehri Dam: What used to be a 3-hour hill drive is now a 20-minute flight.
Dehradun to Nainital: Connecting the two most popular lake districts in the North.

Port Blair to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep): Perfect for travelers looking to avoid sea sickness on ferries.

Vijayawada to Srisailam: Utilizing the Krishna River (Prakasam Barrage) to take pilgrims directly to the hilltop temple at Srisailam.

To make seaplanes popular, the government is including them under the UDAN (Regional Connectivity Scheme). This means many seats will be subsidized.
Subsidized Rates: For flights around 45–60 minutes, tickets are expected to start at approximately ₹2,500 to ₹3,500.
Commercial Rates: For premium or non-subsidized routes (like luxury coastal tours), prices may range between ₹5,000 and ₹10,000 per person.
Pro Tip: Since these planes only carry about 14–19 passengers, tickets will sell out fast! Always book at least 2–3 weeks in advance once the booking portals open.

You might wonder, "Why not just take a boat or a regular flight?"
1. Saves Time: A 6-hour rocky boat ride in the Andamans can be a smooth 20-minute flight.
2. No Need for Airports: These planes land on existing water bodies, meaning they can reach remote areas where building a runway is impossible.
3. The View: Flying at a lower altitude over the coast or mountains provides a view that regular jets simply can't offer.

Currently, bookings are moving toward integration with major travel portals (like MakeMyTrip or EaseMyTrip) and the airlines' own websites. Keep an eye on:

Baggage Limits: Because seaplanes are small, they have strict weight limits. Expect to carry less than the usual 15kg (usually around 7kg to 10kg).
Weather Dependent: Since these planes land on water, operations are very sensitive to high waves and heavy monsoon rains.
Boarding: Instead of a giant terminal, you’ll likely board from a floating jetty - so wear comfortable, non-slip shoes!
Seaplane travel is set to change how we explore India’s hidden gems. Whether it's the serene islands of Lakshadweep or the spiritual waters of Rishikesh, your next big adventure might just start with a splash!
